What is trenchless pipeline repair for stormwater & sewer systems?
There are essentially two main types of trenchless pipeline repair (no-dig excavation). They are referred to as pipe bursting and pipe lining.
Pipe Lining: Involves installing a lining inside the existing pipe, it is also known as CIPP (cured in place pipe). The liner is installed inside the existing failing pipe so that the old pipe doesn’t need to be removed. Only one access hole needs to be dug to insert the cured in place pipe, which consists of a flexible tube of resin, it is pulled into the old pipe and inflated. The resign cures in just a few hours, making a new hardened resign pipe inside the old, damaged pipe. This method reduces the diameter of the pipe by about a quarter inch. This does not affect the flow and ability of the pipe to perform to its original capacity.
Pipe Bursting: Pipe bursting involves pulling the new pipe through the old, failed pipe while fracturing the old pipe outward. Two access holes are dug on either side of the lateral pipeline to pull the new pipe through. Pipe bursting can still be performed, even if the old pipe is collapsed if a cable can be pulled through the collapsed area.
