What is trenchless pipeline repair for stormwater & sewer systems?
There are essentially two main types of trenchless pipeline repair (no-dig excavation). They are referred to as pipe bursting and pipe lining.
Pipe Lining: Pipe Lining is the process of placing a lining inside an existing pipe, also known as CIPP or cured in place pipe. This method allows for the installation of a new liner without the need to remove the old, failing pipe. Only one access hole is required to insert a flexible resin tube which is pulled into the damaged pipe and inflated. The resin cures in just a few hours, creating a new hardened pipe within the old one. Although this method reduces the pipe’s diameter by about a quarter inch, it does not interfere with the flow or performance of the pipe.
Pipe Bursting: Pipe bursting involves pulling the new pipe through the old, failed pipe while fracturing the old pipe outward. Then, two access holes are dug on either side of the lateral pipeline to pull the new pipe through. Pipe bursting can still be performed, even if the old pipe is collapsed if a cable can be pulled through the collapsed area.
